Learn about different types of scams which are becoming ever more sophisticated.
1. Online Scams
Phishing – Fraudulent emails, messages, or websites that mimic legitimate organizations to steal personal information.
Tech Support Scams – Fake calls or pop-ups claiming your device has a virus, leading you to pay for unnecessary services.
Online Shopping Scams – Fake e-commerce websites offering products that never arrive or counterfeit goods.
Romance Scams – Scammers pose as love interests online to build trust and then request money.
Investment Scams – Fraudulent investment opportunities promising high returns with little risk.
Always check an email from an official source is from the correct @ as opposed to a random @.
2. Financial Scams
Ponzi Schemes – Investment fraud where returns to earlier investors are paid from new investors’ money.
Pyramid Schemes – A recruitment-based scam where people pay to join and earn money by recruiting others.
Advance-Fee Scams – Scammers request upfront payments for a promised service or reward that never materializes.
Charity Scams – Fake charities that collect donations under false pretences, often during disasters or crises.
If it’s too good to be true, then it isn’t true.
3. Phone Scams
IRS/Tax Scams – Callers pretend to be tax authorities demanding immediate payment under threat of arrest.
Lottery & Sweepstakes Scams – Victims are told they won a prize but must pay taxes or fees to claim it.
Grandparent Scams – Scammers pretend to be a relative in distress, asking for urgent financial help.
Bank or Credit Card Scams – Calls pretending to be from banks, tricking victims into sharing financial details.
Never share any financial details over the phone, no matter how convincing the caller.
4. Identity Theft & Personal Fraud
Account Takeover – Fraudsters gain access to online accounts and make unauthorized transactions.
Medical Scams – Fraudulent medical treatments, fake insurance plans, or identity theft using medical data.
Social Security/Benefits Fraud – Scammers use stolen identities to claim government benefits.
Deepfake Scams – AI-generated fake videos or voice recordings used for impersonation and fraud.

5. Travel & Rental Scams
Vacation Rental Scams – Fraudulent listings that collect deposits for non-existent properties.
Fake Ticket Scams – Selling counterfeit tickets to concerts, flights, or sporting events.
Timeshare Scams – High-pressure sales tactics convincing victims to buy into fraudulent vacation schemes.
Use Google reviews to find out if any of the above are genuine and you’ll see those that have been revealed as scams.
6. Social Media & Influencer Scams
Giveaway Scams – Fake giveaways asking for personal details or money to claim a prize.
Cryptocurrency Scams – Fake investment schemes promising huge returns in crypto markets.
Catfishing – Scammers create fake identities to deceive people online for personal or financial gain.
Fake identities can be created from just 15 seconds of genuine audio and video. There was a recent spate of fake celebrities endorsing get rich schemes supposedly on genuine TV chat shows.
7. Home Improvement & Contractor Scams
Door-to-Door Scams – Fake contractors offer services, demand payment upfront, and disappear.
Disaster Relief Scams – Fraudsters claim to provide emergency home repairs after natural disasters.
Utility Scams – Fake utility workers demand payment or threaten to cut off services.
Always ask for and check identity credentials.
8. Legal & Government Scams
Fake Lawsuits & Warrants – Victims are threatened with legal action unless they pay an immediate fee.
Jury Duty Scams – Scammers claim the victim missed jury duty and must pay a fine to avoid arrest.
License & Permit Scams – Fake government agencies collect money for fraudulent licenses or permits.
Always check a fine is legitimate by visiting the site of the agency and remember if you pay a fake fine, your financial details have been exposed and will be used.
9. Health & Wellness Scams
Fake Cures & Treatments – Bogus medicines or health products with false claims.
Weight Loss Scams – Unrealistic diet or supplement offers that don’t work.
Medicare & Insurance Fraud – Fake plans or stolen personal information for fraudulent billing.
Again, use Google reviews to find out how genuine a claim may be.
Scamming is an industry that dwarfs the GDP of many countries as Scam farms in the Far East are stealing huge sums from unsuspecting individuals. The FBI calculated that in 2023, US citizens lost 53 billion dollars to scammers.
