Beds – time for a change and where to start?

Find the right bed for you because as we get older so what we require from a bed can change.

If you are thinking of changing your bed, you need to decide which type you want.

Divan vs storage vs bedstead

Your bed is likely to be the most prominent piece of furniture in your bedroom, so choose a bed type that fits with the style and size of the room.

There are three main types of beds: divan beds, bedsteads and storage beds.

Divan

Divan beds are a popular and versatile option, offering various styles to suit different preferences.

Essentially, a divan consists of a base onto which you can add a mattress and often a headboard, either separately or as part of a package.

There are two main types of divan bases:

  1. Pocket-sprung divans: These feature springs within the base, providing a softer top and added comfort.
  2. Platform-top divans: These are more budget-friendly and have a hard top, offering a firmer feel. However, the overall firmness of the bed will depend on the mattress you choose.

Single divan bases typically range from £150 to £300.

Doubles and larger sizes usually start around £300 and can go up to over £3,000, depending on factors such as brand, materials, and features.

It’s essential to consider your budget, preferred level of firmness, and desired features when choosing a divan bed.

Bedsteads

Bedsteads offer a decorative and stylish option for your bedroom, typically constructed from slatted frames of metal or wood, including a base, legs, and headboard.

These beds come in various colours, finishes, and styles, ranging from traditional pine designs to luxurious four-poster options.

Upholstered bedsteads, featuring real or faux leather, are also gaining popularity. Different slat types offer a harder or more flexible feel.

Bedsteads can range from £90 to £1,200, depending on factors such as materials, craftsmanship, and design.

Doubles are generally available for less than £500, making them accessible for various budgets.

When choosing a bedstead, consider factors like your preferred style, desired features, and budget to find the perfect option for your bedroom. Storing items under the bed can look messy.

Storage Beds

Storage beds are an excellent solution for maximizing space in your bedroom while maintaining a stylish aesthetic.

These beds offer ample storage options underneath, making them ideal for those with limited space.

There are two main types of storage beds to choose from:

  1. Classic style: Featuring pull-out drawers for storage.
  2. Ottoman style: Equipped with a piston-assisted lift mechanism, allowing the foot of the bed to lift up and reveal storage space underneath.

Affordable double storage beds typically range from £150 to £300.

Premium ottoman-style beds can exceed £1,500 due to their advanced design and features.

When selecting a storage bed, consider factors such as your storage needs, bedroom space, and budget to find the perfect fit for your home.

Other considerations when buying a bed.

  1. Is it fully assembled and if so, is there enough room to get it into the bedroom?
  2. Is a mattress included?
  3. Does the Divan bed come with a headboard?
  4. Are the dimensions wide and long enough for the occupants ?
  5. How long is guarantee and what does it cover?
  6. Will they remove your old bed?
