Weight Loss Pill Trial. Positive news about weight loss and staying slim.

Learn about the pill that could keep Britons slim for life and ward off other diseases.

Millions of Britons could one day take a daily weight-loss pill as a long-term treatment to stay slim and reduce the risk of illnesses such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, according to a major new trial.

Researchers tested orforglipron, a tablet made by Eli Lilly that works in a similar way to weight-loss injections including Mounjaro and Wegovy. The pill targets the same GLP-1 gut receptors but is cheaper and easier to manufacture and store than injections.

The study found that people who switched from weekly injections to the daily tablet maintained around 75 per cent of their previous weight loss after a year, while also keeping blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels stable. Researchers said the findings could help answer one of the biggest questions in obesity treatment: how to maintain weight loss in the long term.

Experts believe the drug could eventually be prescribed more widely, including to people who are overweight rather than severely obese, as a preventative treatment to stop obesity-related illnesses developing. The pill is expected to be considered for approval in the UK within the next year.

However, there are potential side effects. Similar to other GLP-1 agonists, the most common side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and stomach discomfort, which are usually mild to moderate. So whilst available in the US, consult your doctor for medical advice.
