Succession

Everybody’s favourite family of light-to-moderate sociopaths (okay, upgraded to heavy for certain family members) and the BOX set of five series is available on Sky On Demand.

The Roy kids’ plot against their industry-titan father Logan, played brilliantly by Brian Cox, and often themselves as they try to insinuate themselves as Dad’s favourite.

There are times when you haven’t a clue what they are talking about but somehow it sticks together and sucks you in. Watch from Series One to enjoy the family dynamic that often threatens to disintegrate as they scramble to climb the greasy pole.

The White Lotus

Mike White’s anthology series provides a satirical take on the lives of wealthy vacationers.

With two seasons, the first set in a Hawaiian resort and the second in Sicily, the show cleverly weaves together the personal and professional lives of its characters. Each season uncovers an overarching mystery amidst unexpected twists and turns, making for exceptionally well-written comedy drama.

The Last Of Us

This gripping zombie epic, based on a video game, delves into a world where a fungal infection transforms humans.

Set two decades after the outbreak, Joel (Pedro Pascal) embarks on a perilous journey to smuggle the resilient teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through zombie-infested territory.

Craig Mazin, co-creator and mastermind behind Chernobyl, transcends the typical blood and gore of zombie dramas to craft a narrative with genuine emotional depth. The series’ standout third episode, a poignant love story between a doomsday prepper and an intruder, stands as a pinnacle of television storytelling.

Mare Of Easttown

Kate Winslet delivers a standout performance as a troubled small-town American detective in this captivating detective drama.

Set in a forgotten corner of Pennsylvania, the series presents a gripping whodunnit narrative, balancing grim moments with humour and poignant relationships. Its compelling storytelling drew a larger audience on Sky than Game of Thrones with its debut episode.

Gomorrah

This series offers an unvarnished look at the Neapolitan criminal underworld.

It portrays raw and brutal antiheroes as they vie for control in Naples. Gone are the stylish, well-dressed gangs, replaced by a gritty and realistic depiction of organized crime.

Over five series, it is one of the very best portrayals of life in this world and the satisfactory conclusion to the series, reflects the quality of writing and plot.

Game of Thrones

Rarely has a series inspired such attention and eager anticipation whenever a new series was announced – and there were eight of them.

One of the tricks of this show was that no character however significant was safe from the metaphorical or real axe. Multiple plot lines and some heroic and some odious characters spawned a multitude of famous moments.

This is TV with the highest production values and loses nothing with multiple viewings. Critics lambasted the very final episode (Series 8) but after everything that had gone before, it was never going to satisfy.

Big Little Lies

A whodunit with a stellar cast: Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz. A young mother moves to an exclusive area of Monterey where mothers have seemingly perfect lives. They all hide secrets and the women come together in a triumph over male violence.

The Sopranos

Considered by many to be one of the best TV shows of all time.

It ran for six series and charts the life of Italian-American mobster Tony Soprano, and his dealings with his family, mafia and rivals.

Winner of 21 Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes.

Zuckerberg

As Facebook approaches its 20th anniversary, this compelling documentary delves into its rise.

It draws from archival interviews with Mark Zuckerberg and insights from former executives. It chronicles the platform’s meteoric growth until 2016, a pivotal year marked by its role in Donald Trump’s election and subsequent controversies over data handling.

The film raises important questions about accountability at Meta and Zuckerberg’s impact on society, highlighting ongoing concerns about the platform’s influence.

Chernobyl

A show much talked about as it’s a reminder of just how serious was the explosion of one of the powerplant’s nuclear cores.

Over five episodes, it will make you realise how close this came to being a global disaster as the powers that be tried to downplay the situation and as is often the case, it is the local community who suffer most.

Sky Documentaries is a great source of programmes likely to suit whatever your interests may be: true crime, biographies, sport, politics, music and controversy.
